There is no question that it is easier for a male to be successful in the modeling industry than a female. This mostly comes because guys have a much larger range. Females in the industry are held to such requirement that only a handful can even qualify. While the male look is easier to obtain, there still is a range. The first thing to discuss is the age. Male models can vary anywhere from 16 to 60. The most defined market is the 23-37 age group. The great thing about being a male model over a hire female models is the industry is lacking men at every age. Obviously if you fit into the strongest category you are going to have the best chance, but models are in high demand and all ages.

The physical requirements are quite broad. The majority of the time, the industry is looking for a model with the height between 5 feet 10 inches and 6 feet 2 inches. For the most part, it is better to be on the tall side of the spectrum. Like their female counterparts, male models are expected to be in great shape with little body fat. This can vary depending on the situation. There are many different types of models. Many companies are looking for bigger models that more fit their client tele. This means that even if you aren’t six two with an amazing body, there is still plenty of work for you.

One of the most important things agencies look for in their models is great skin. Male models need to lose all the body hair, and the skin needs to be smooth. This has become an absolute norm in the industry. The most important thing is to have fun and do good work. If you can get a name as being someone that is easy to work with and does excellent work, you can go far in the modeling business.

The bottom line is there is a huge shortage of good male models. If you have the desire, locate your local talent agency and see what kind of an offer they are willing to make.

Walking down the runway, there’s the regular top models: Gemma Ward – 20, Hilary Rhoda – 21, Agyness Deyn – 25, and then there’s the occasional MaddisonGabriel – 13. Wait a second. 13 years old?! Many people might raise their eyebrow when they hear this. I certainly did. But is 12-13 really too young?

Top model and one of the world’s first super female models Janice Dickinson, argues against young girls modeling. “There’s lots of drugs, there’s lot of alcohol, there’s lot’s of photographers preying on these girls.” Listening to that I would say that pre-teens and even girls up to 18 are too young to teen models But what about Kimora Lee Simmons? Didn’t she have a contract with Chanel at the age of 13? How come people never make a big deal about her?

Another issue about young models is the growing fear of eating disorders. There actually have been deaths amongst the models and that’s when we all know that something is wrong. Even though there’s such a huge controversy over skinny models, Karl Lagerfeld claims, “We don’t see anorexic (girls). The girls are skinny, they have skinny bones.” On the other hand, Vogue’s editor, Anna Wintour is said to be sick of skinny models. Now going back to the main subject. If a young teen gets thrown into the fashion industry, are there chances of her developing an eating disorder? Highly possible, but some argue that since they aren’t fully developed women, there is no reason to worry about their size and weight.

In my opinion, I think their should be a certain age requirement and if the model’s too young, she just won’t be able to model till they grow up. There’s a lot of issues on the line such as sexuality, health problems, and too much stress that models might suffer in the fashion industry. However, I still wonder in awe when I see girls that are just 15 that are beautiful and know how to model. They have talent, no doubt about it, but are they presenting it at too young of an age? Well this debate may take a long time…

The premier fashion showcase in Moscow, Russian Fashion Week (”RFW”) launches its 18th season in Congress Hall of renowned World Trade Center on March 29th. As the biggest fashion event in Eastern Europe, RFW will feature 50 collections of the best Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian designers along with some of the best names in French, Italian and Spanish fashion.

Russia’s most honored fashion designer, Slava Zaitsev, will open RFW with his haute couture collection dedicated to the 100-year anniversary of Dyagilev’s Seasons in Paris. Sergey Dyagilev was the world-famous ballet impresario and founder of Ballets Russes which conquered Paris at the beginning of the 20th century. Slava Zaitsev is a true Soviet/Russian fashion legend, dubbed the Red Dior by the international media due to his faerie collections that so often punctured the Iron Curtain that once separated the Soviet Union from the western world. Slava started his career in the 1960s and still makes fashion headlines and is currently a host on the highly rated television program Fashion Verdict. “Slava Zaitsev is over 70, but he works harder than modeling tips youngsters,” says Alexander Shumsky, President of Russian Fashion Week. “Dozens of renowned Russian designers came through his Fashion Lab, the best fashion school in Russia. We are proud to have his anniversary collection for the RFW opening.”

Celebrated French designer Jean-Charles De Castelbajac will make his RFW debut on March 29th.

Russian Fashion Week is acknowledged as the fashion gateway to Russia and the most talented international fashion designers from around the globe continue to utilize the RFW runway as the entry point to the Russian marketplace.
